The biggest mammal to ever exist on the planet earth is the BLUE WHALE. The blue whale’s length is very big. The fins are tapering at the end. The length of the head of the blue whale makes up somewhat less than one-fourth of the length its whole body. The blue whale's body is free from irregularities. The color of blue whale is bluish-gray whereas the color of the under part of its flipper is white. The lower part of fluke is a little bit darkish in color. In the deathly cold waters of the Northern Pacific, the northern Atlantic, and Antarctic the blue whale uses the microorganisms, which are known as diatoms. It gives the lower portion of the body of blue whale a mixture of yellow and green color. Due to this the early hunters and researchers of the whale christened it the name “sulfur bottom”. The dorsal portion that is the fin is very small in size and triangular or sometimes even curved in shape. It is located a long way back on the body. The measure of the fins is roughly a foot in size even for the biggest of whales. What a site it is to see this biggest of animals.
The flippers of the whale constitute only 12% of the body’s length. The flukes of the fins spread in the opposite directions giving them a triangular shape but the edges aren’t pointed. The length of the biggest blue whale ever recorded is 108-feet which turned out to be an adult female. She was caught in Antarctica. In today’s world the blue whales in the southern part reach the length of an approximate 100-feet, but the whales in the northern part are relatively smaller that is around 80-feet long. The Blue whale can easily weigh more than 100-110 tons. If there is a comparison between the males and females of the same age group the latter are bigger and weigh anywhere around 150-155 tons. The main food of the whales is the shrimp like being better known as krill. In the feeding season that is during summer season the whales eat an exorbitant amount of less than 5 tons of krill every day.
This means on an average each whale eats 40-50 million krill a day. The whales don’t have teeth instead they have keratin, which is a fingernail-like object in its place. Each keratin measures approximately 20 inches and it has nearly 400 such plates on each side of the jaw. The eating method of the whale is also strange. The blue whales are found in all the oceans of the world but they keep on migrating. Many researches done presently indicate that blue whales mate when they attain maturity that is at the age of 6-10 years and after a gap of 2 years calves are born. The calves are nursed and fed by their mother for 8-10 months. The whales are usually found in groups but it is also not unusual to find them in pairs. They can swim at the fastest speed of50 km/hr but during normal circumstances they swim at a speed of 20 km/hr. The largest animal is quite the wonder.
