Peregrine Falcons are the greatest diving birds on the land. The name is derived from the Latin root which means foreigner or wanderer. These birds generally keep moving in the Southern America and certain parts of Europe. The male progeny is called tiercels while the females are called as falcons. The best ability of the breed is to dive while they see the prey at a distance from great heights. They dive at such great speeds and they kick the other birds while diving which ever comes in their way. They kill the prey and the speed with which they dive helps in killing the prey. They are very smart at it and they do use several tricks and tactics to kill the prey. Their speed varies from 70 to 130 miles in an hour.
Their nostrils have baffles which helps them to breathe heavily during the long dives. They have very good sight and they can see even in great darkness and they chiefly hunt for their prey in either the dawn or the dusk. The weaker animals are killed by the falcons as they cannot visualize the attack from the top while their eyesight stays to be in the horizontal direction.
These birds are dark blue in color while the body under the feathers stays to be white in color and have horizontal ruling lines in the lower half of the body. As they grow older they get brown in color and the head turns out to be black with time. They have long wings which help them in steady flight. Their speed is even better than the pigeons. These birds are youthful and are always eager for flight. They generally prefer staying at great heights and are not available to view in the human zone of residence.
These birds generally stay near the mountains and cliffs at great heights and they are smart enough to use the nests built by other birds of the same or the other species which too stay at great heights. Falcons weigh around three to four kgs and the female are bit more healthy as compared to the male falcons. They grow to the average sexual maturity in 2-3 years and generally breed in the winter season. They generally have 3-4 bird babies at a time which stay in the nest for not more than two months before they start flying on their own. They generally live for 15- 20 years. They generally feed on other small birds which come in their way of flight. It kills the bird during its flight and then when the bird falls on the ground it enjoys its great meal and dines with pleasure. There are different races of peregrine staying all across the world and are mostly prevalent in NewZealand and Antarctica. They have great physical stamina and their sharp beak helps them to tear their prey into pieces to dine over it.
The population of the peregines is diminishing these days due to greater usage of insecticides and pesticides and other poisonous chemicals which are used to control other species of birds. Peregines feed on other birds, which might have died due to eating poisonous grains or seeds and that hampers their life too. In this manner they too become victims of the treats and lose their life. DDT and other insecticides used these days are harmful and several birds and falcons are losing their lives because of it. Government is taking measures to protect these breed of birds and they are under protection and rules have been made little strict for them.
