The most venomous snake in the world is the fierce snake or the inland taipan snake.A single venomous strike from the fierce snake, believe it or not, has enough poison to kill 100 human adults at a time. The most deadly species of the fierce snake are the ones from Australia which have the most potent venom than any other snake on the earth’s surface. The fierce snake has a total length of 2.5 meters, though the common length is 1.8 meters. It is dark or light brown in color, the color shades may vary according to the climatic conditions where it is found. It is usually of a darker shade in winter to sustain and absorb more heat and likewise in summer it is lighter skinned to emit out the intense heat. Due to the availability of taipan antivenom produced by the Australian Reptile Park and Serum Laboratories in Melbourne not much human fatalities are reported. And the snake though being the most venomous has never been the major cause of human deaths occurring due to snake bites.
The first live snake specimen was captured in the year 1975. It produces highly toxic venom which paralyses the nervous system and heart leading to an instant death. Small animals bitten by the fierce snake are reported to have died within seconds. The venom potency of a fierce snake is fifty times more than the Indian cobra’s. The snake passes out 110 mg of poison with a single bite. The Fierce Snake prefers solitude and lives mostly in isolated areas around South Australia, South Wales and Queensland borders. It is habitually most active in the early half of dawn when it basks in the sun. In cooler weather conditions, it is also energetic in the afternoons; and in extreme hot weather it turns nocturnal. It is the relative of the Oxyuranus scutellatus species of snake, which was formerly known as the most poisonous snake until the discovery of the fierce snake.
The diet of the fierce snake consists of small mammals, chiefly local rats. The prey is cowed down with a swift, accurate strike, thereby injecting the dreadfully toxic venom deep into the prey. The snake population is greatly reliant on the accessibility of its choicest prey, the plague rat. When the rat number increases, the numbers of Fierce Snakes will also rise. But the decrease of rat population results in decrease in the number of snakes from lack of food. The female Fierce Snake lays 12 to 20 eggs per batch, which are usually placed in deserted animal holes.
Even though they are the most venomous snakes in the world, Inland Taipans are not as ferocious as their name proposes. These poor things are actually very timid and enigmatic, and bite when only they are threatened or challenged. Reptile custodians or keepers at Australia Zoo spend a lot of time managing these deadly snakes and learning their behavior before handling them in their natural habitats.
